RPS is closing early due to inclement weather.


  • We will be dismissing Longfellow at 12:15 PM today (after lunch).
  • All RPS buildings with the exception of SACC (School Age Child Care) at Bamber Valley, Jefferson, and Northrop will be closing today at 12:30 PM.
  • SACC is closing at 6 PM today. 
  • All afternoon and evening Community Education/PAIIR classes for early childhood, youth, adults, and adults with exceptional abilities are canceled.
  • All community building reservations are canceled.
  • All after-school athletics, activities, and co-curricular are canceled.
  • Weekend events and/or facility rentals will be determined by appropriate Community Education and athletic staff and communicated via local media outlets. Community Education’s Inclement Weather Line is (507) 328-4010.


Is your child eligible for Kindergarten? It's time for kindergarten registration!

Children who will be five years of age on or before September 1, 2019 are eligible for kindergarten. If your child is eligible for kindergarten but will not be attending the 2019-2020 school year, please call (507) 328-4200 or email so that we may update our records.

You can register online by visiting…/registration___recor…/forms or by visiting the Registration & Records Office M-F 8 AM - 4:45 PM at the Edison Administration Building (615 7th St. SW).

1. Immunization Record (The most recent record you have. We realize your child may not be up to date if they have not yet turned five years old).
2. Certified Birth Certificate (not hospital certificate). Bring your Certified Birth Certificate and we will create a photocopy, no need to purchase an additional certified copy.
3. Early Childhood Developmental Screening Summary (only if your child was screened in another school district).

IMPORTANT NOTE: Non-public students must enroll in Rochester Public Schools to receive transportation, standardized testing, and other student support services. Students planning to attend St. Pius, St. Francis, or Holy Spirit are automatically enrolled in Rochester Public Schools.

Facilities Task Force

Update from November 27, 2018


  • The goal of the meeting was to determine which information would be placed on a community survey, to be administered by School Perceptions.
  • The task force presented middle school boundary option for a new middle school. This was information only, no decisions were made.
  • The board recommended survey base questions and requested to see the survey question at an upcoming (early January) school board meeting. 



  • Build a new 720 capacity elementary school on property the district currently owns in the NW
  • Reconstruct Bishop elementary to a 720 capacity school
  • Reconstruct Longfellow elementary to a 720 capacity school
  • Build a new 1200 capacity middle school in the SW on property the district would need to purchase (40 acres +/-, with an 80 +/- option for a future HS and ES). 
  • Safety and security upgrades to occur at schools without a secure entrance

The facilities task force has also recommended specific district program moves to increase capacity and balance diversity district-wide (such as socio-economic status and ethnicity). This information may not present itself on the community survey, but the information has been discussed at length over the past several months in both citizen voice and school board meetings. Programming changes have not been determined by the school board and will not be determined until later in the referendum process.

  • 45/15 schedule at Longfellow and/or Pinewood elementary schools
  • Montessori program relocates to Hoover
  • Spanish Immersion and Newcomer programs relocate to Bishop and Bamber elementary schools
  • Highly Gifted programming may potentially expand to all middle schools; Friedell middle school building would be repurposed


  • Reconstruct Churchill to a 600 – 720 capacity building
  • New lighting and sound systems at all 3 HS auditoriums
  • Close 3 pools at the middle schools, add a competition pool at Century, correct depth at Mayo for equity and to reduce operating costs and Long Term Facilities Maintenance work
  • Site equity for the 3 HS; turf, restrooms, concessions, and storage


  • Citizen Voice Question and Answer event on December 17 from 5:30-6:30 in the Edison Board Room.
  • The Project Oversight Committee (POC) is working with School Perceptions (this is an independent research firm that specializes in conducting surveys for public schools) to design a draft survey during the month of December.
  • The intent of the survey is to help gauge the community’s interest in a referendum and at what cost.
  • The task force will review the survey questions later in December.
  • The school board will review the survey questions in early January.
  • Once approved by the school board, the survey will be mailed to all residents in the district and is administered by School Perceptions in January/February. 
  • Residents may take the survey via an online method or a mail-in model during the month of January and/or February.
  • The survey will be available in multiple languages.
  • Survey results will be presented to the task force and school board in early March.
  • After the results are reviewed, the school board will potentially make a decision on referendum questions and values.
